This might be heresy, but I prefer Siena over Florence. Siena is an architectural gem today largely because it became a backwater in the 1400s. Losing the war with the Florentines and suffering a major population decline due to the Black Death meant that it avoided the 'attentions' of 19th century architects who altered so much of Florence. |

The region between Florence and Siena, Chianti means more than Sangiovese grapes and robust red wine. It is also one of the most beautiful parts of Tuscany, with wooded hillsides and well-preserved towns and villages. |
